BarControl Systems and Services, in partnership with the Humanitarian Software Foundation have just completed the first phase of installation for the Hopital Sacre Coeur in Milot, Haiti.

Hopital Sacre Coeur operates with major support from The Crudem Foundation based in Ludlow Massachusetts.

Hôpital Sacré Coeur (HSC) is the largest private hospital in the North of Haiti. Located in the town of Milot, the 73 bed hospital has provided uninterrupted service for 25 years. This premier Haitian healthcare facility has been a beacon of hope for the people of Northern Haiti as it creates a healthier Haiti, one dignified life at a time.

The Crudem Foundation through the Humanitarian Software Foundation has chosen to install iBEM (BarControl Enterprise Manager) to track all medical / surgical supplies, as well as, pharmaceuticals from receipt through the dispensing of prescriptions. Progress is slow in a third world country, especially one that has been hit with a major earthquake, a hurricane, and a massive outbreak of cholera. But it was such disasters, and the generosity of vendors that forwarded large amounts of supplies, that pointed out that especially in times of crisis knowing what you have and where it is, is critical. Even more important is the knowledge of what you don’t have available.

With the completion of the first phase, just as the larger section of the new warehouse was completed, Hopital Sacre Coeur now has the ability to track all med/surg supplies with total accuracy. The first phase of the system includes the iBEM software package of Dell servers, installation of the Motorola AP 5131 RF Access Points in the larger non-climate controlled section of the warehouse, installation of a wireless Zebra S4M labeler, and 6 Motorola MC9090 RF handheld data collection units.

Rather simplistic in this first phase the primary focus of the installation was receiving, license plating of each carton, transferring, and issuing of the med/surg supplies.  Also the Crudem Foundation will have total visibility to the inventory levels in the US.  The next phase is to include the same processes in the pharmaceutical side along with tracking pharm. inventory levels in various remote locations within the hospital and maintaining a replenishment routine for these remote locations.  Future phases will include bar coded prescriptions and tracking dispensing of pharmaceuticals at the dosage level.

Despite the problems of getting hardware shipped to a hospital in Haiti and coordinating an installation in a third world country, this first phase has proven to be successful.  The people of the Crudem Foundation prove to be both understanding of the working situation in Haiti, and generally great people to work with.
